ABSTRACT

The texts written by Florence that are decisive for this study are transcribed in Annex. With the aid of dates and page numbers found in several of his diaries, the reader will sometimes notice that the texts are chained in a sequence, although not systematically, due to the fact that Florence undertook several experiments at the same time. The information that contains the sources is of a different nature: written documents and iconographic records. These are the sources that comprise the information about Florence’s research related to photography. Their content puts into evidence a series of clues that, after being retraced, made it possible to reconstitute and confirm the process of Florence’s discovery. Regarding the sources materialized by means of plastic representation, those contain strictly scientific and practical information because they visually transmit the techniques and methods found in Florence’s journals, essentially in a period between 1833 and 1838. Hence, they are also of scientific interest to this study.
