ABSTRACT

An interesting contrast with regard to Florence’s iconography of the Langsdorff Expedition was established between 1830 and 1833, when he produced works that allow us to know in more detail the man that he was. During that period, he was nearing the creation of his printing method: polygraphy. By use of plastic expression and through the texts in which he confesses his feelings, Florence illustrates his own situation of geographical and cultural isolation. During that period (1830–1833), Florence conducted a commercial activity in Vila de Sao Carlos, located in the hinterland of Sao Paulo Province, where he owned a fabric and garment shop. One of the watercolors in Studies of the Skies is of particular interest due to its content. In this manuscript, Florence wrote the word chamber and after that he crossed it out and changed it for salle, as it appears on the text. It is the first time that expression chambre obscure would appear in his diaries.
