ABSTRACT

The statements made by Florence that were published in the Brazilian press demonstrate his undemanding stance with regard to the invention of photography in Europe. In this text, Florence refers to his two discoveries: polygraphy and photography. With regard specifically to photography, Florence’s modest and generous attitude is surprising: “I will not dispute discoveries with anyone, because the same idea can occur to two people, and also because I always found the results that achieved as precarious, and to each one what is deserved.” This statement leaves up in the air some data that will try to clarify. One of them could perhaps be of some importance: it states that a “report” about polygraphy and photography “was sent last year to Paris out of courtesy, by a person.” On October 11th, 1833, the explorers left Rio de Janeiro and followed the route to São Paulo along the Paraíba Valley, arriving in Vila de São Carlos on January 7th, 1834.
