ABSTRACT

You have relieved my mind a little on this point of girlhood. I should like also to relieve yours about the things you are quite right in saying I only half mean. But I seldom say anything which I don't mean—at least about a third:—mostly when I say anything shocking I mean it entirely—only in a sense which if the reader or hearer don't understand, I can't make him understand. But some few things very shocking to you I say with sorrowful belief of their entire truth.
