ABSTRACT

I meant to speak of that which is not essential to the possession of wealth and position, exclusiveness. I believe it is difficult, almost impossible, for people to mix much with those poorer than themselves, if they desire to 'keep up an appearance.' I believe there are very few people in England who do not wish this more or less. I believe that, though this is a small thing in itself, it is eating out the heart of English life, till it is becoming a hollow mockery; because it involves the loss of sympathy it is accursed. When once love is awakened it has no power.
