ABSTRACT

Mr. Maurice returned on Thursday, and I wrote to ask him to come to see me for a few minutes' private conversation. Of course, like an angel of help as he is, he came on Friday evening. I told him our difficulty; he spoke so nobly, like his own great self, without one single quoted or adopted conventionality. I hardly knew that on such subjects he was so free from conventional notions. He spoke so tenderly, as if he cared for us all, so trustfully, as if he knew that we could not be hurt.
