ABSTRACT

My pity and sympathy were always with Martha, and I have felt it hard to believe that hers was not the better part, if she had learnt to worship while she worked. At any rate Martha's part must be mine, so I must see what can be made of it. Certainly the resolution to make pauses for quiet thought is a most difficult duty. I believe the difficulty is connected with pride and want of faith. Attention to details is blessed if it springs from simple obedience; but restlessness and anxiety arise from a lingering doubt whether God can really arrange His world without our help.
