ABSTRACT

INtheprecedingchapterswehavebeenabletotracea growingsensibilityforhumansuffering,andtowatchthe philanthropicspiritseekingconstantlyfreshmethodsof expressioninmultiplieddeedsofbenevolence:theobjects havebeenpursuedbyindividualsormorefrequentlyby groupsofpersonsformedintoprivateassociationseitherfor renderingimmediateassistance,orforsecuringbyagitation somepublicandParliamentaryaction.Inthecourseofthis movementofspecialisationmanykindsofdistress,hitherto unregardedorneglected,haveestablishedtheirclaimto recognitionandsympathy.
