THEpromotionofthriftandthedistributionofsoupare commonlyregardedasmarkingoppositepolesofthe philanthropicinstinct.Thetwothingsareopposedtoone anotherinmodernthought,sothatweshouldbeequally startledtohearoftheCharityOrganisationSocietyopening apromiscuousfoodkitchen,orofamission,wherethe distributionofbreadatthecloseofagospelservicewas usual,orderingareamof"casepapers.''Atfirstthis discrepancydidnotexist;thriftandsoupwerenotsymbols ofcompetingprinciples;theywerehardlyevenalternatives, butmoreproperlymerelycomplementarymethods.Toa largeextenttheyhaveacommoncause,andacommonaim: theyproceedfromthesamegroupofphilanthropists.
