Lexicalization and grammaticalization of person
As has been discussed in the previous chapter, the system of person is concerned with identification of and reference to the participant roles in discourse. It is commonly encoded by nominal and pronominal expressions; however, cross-linguistically, other resources of language as meaning potential can perform the function as well, be they lexical or grammatical. In this chapter, a descriptive analysis of lexicalization and grammaticalization of the system of person is conducted with data drawn from a wide range of languages. From a typological point of view, the construal of a certain aspect of meaning (person in this case) achieves the same end by adopting diversified means in different languages, especially in genetically unrelated ones.
