ABSTRACT

The links between climate change, socio-economic development, health and environmental sustainability have become dominant and urgent global concerns. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 2007), scientific consensus points to a quickening and threatening pace of humaninduced climate change. But the questions that need to be answered on climate change may include: how the climate changes, or where and when its effects will be felt most acutely. While it may be clear to some people that the concept of climate change is a reality, it needs to be pointed out that it remains very vague to most people in rural Africa. This is alongside the fact that both cumulative impacts and the increased probability of extreme weather events that characterize climate change present heightened risks to vulnerable populations, economies and ecosystems globally. Under these conditions, understanding successful adaptation to climate change is essential to inform and to take action on how to respond socially and economically.
