ABSTRACT

I propose in my present and the next letter to show the condition of the meat markets of London, and in the two following letters I shall treat of the "fish" and the "green" markets. Fully to elucidate so important a subject as that relating to the supply of food to the metropolis, several tables have been carefully prepared to show the vast extent of business done in Newgate, Leadenhall, Whitechapel, and the other meat markets; also in Billingsgate fish market, and in Covent Garden and the other fruit and vegetable markets. In these inquiries I have been greatly aided by the courteous assistance of the authorities of the several markets.
