ABSTRACT

I have now to deal with the dead markets, or the markets in which meat, ready for consumption, is sold. The wholesale, or carcass markets, are - Newgate, Leadenhall, and Whitechapel. In all these markets there is also a certain degree of the retail trade carried on, and in the way I shall explain. The oldest of the carcass markets is Newgate. Its area comprises a central square, 40 yards long on each side, with a wooden building in the centre, and a diversity of alleys and narrow passages. Adjoining Newgate-market is that of Mr. Tylor - its area covering 20,000 square feet. The entrances to Newgate-market are from Newgate-street (opposite Christ's Hospital), Warwick-lane, Ivy-lane, and from the labyrinth of narrow streets to the north and west of St. Paul's-churchyard.
