ABSTRACT

The number of turners in Great Britain at the time of taking the last census was 7,159; of these, 5,925 were resident in England; 1,042 in Scotland, 147 in Wales, and 45 in the British Isles. Out of the 7 ,159, 5,941 were males and 83 females of 20 years of age and upwards; while of those under 20 years, 1,113 were males and 22 females. Whether the female turners belonged to the operative or trading class the Government returns do not afford us any information. I fmd, however, that females have often been known to work at the trade.
