ABSTRACT

In the present letter I shall conclude my inquiry into the condition of the London carpenters and joiners, with a description of the several applications of machinery to the purposes of their trade. These appear to consist of moulding mills, planing mills, mortising mills, and saw benches for cutting grooves, tennons, and rabbets. To estimate the quantity of manual labour superseded by these means is a very difficult calculation, and only admits of a rough approximation. I have, however, endeavoured to obtain the best information on this point, and the statement here given is, I am convinced, rather below than above the actual amount.
