Introduction Open-minded social scientists often are surprised when their predictions turn out to be correct. Some are even elated. Elation over accurate predictions, however, cannot be expected from present-day scholars inspired by Karl Polanyi (1886-1964). The last 40 years have seen what Karl Polanyi could have called ‘disembedding on a global scale’.
