ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors discuss how companies conduct Business Intelligence (BI) and foresight activities, and presents potential sources of failure to do those successfully. They share insight on how companies collect data to identify changes in the external environment. The authors also discuss how foresight is embedded in the mind-set of a firm using BI and information technology (IT) tools to facilitate the detection of future changes and support long-term strategic decision-making. BI foresight activities begin with management requiring intelligence data for long-term strategic planning. The argument for developing a comprehensive and effective means of instilling foresight systematically throughout an enterprise is compelling. The authors show that two views on embedding business information system (BIS) were discovered: developing BI activities throughout the firm in a creative manner to encourage employee participation and reinforcing foresight activities within the BIS. They identify the themes that are crucial to the success of BI foresight activities in the firm.
