ABSTRACT

At the same time that I started graduate school in psychology, I also picked up rock climbing. I’m not a natural athlete, but I found the mix of physical challenge and adrenalin fun. In retrospect, I also think I liked climbing because it is so much simpler than psychotherapy. Like therapy, climbing presents a never-ending series of incremental challenges. However, unlike therapy, the results of climbing are very easy to assess: you either make it to the top, or you don’t. There is never debate or confusion about success or failure.
