ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a basic outline of how to create, select, implement, and train potential school resource officers (SRO). A police administrator can use this information as an outline of what steps to take to implement a SRO program. Police officers are now commonly deployed in public schools as part of SRO programs. The implementation of a SRO program with training in additional response methods is the best defense against civil liability. Due to concerns over school violence and liability threats that accompany this concern, the safe school initiative must be a top priority of the SRO program. The biggest threat to the safety of the children comes from those on the campus themselves. Part of the process of preventing children from starting a life of crime is building a trusting relationship between youths and law enforcement. Deterrence of youths from committing crimes is an essential goal for a law enforcement agency.
