As is well known, Thackeray’s residence at Cambridge did not last long, and after his subsequent stay in Germany he went to Paris and studied art more or less assiduously. He appears, however, to have had an irresistible yearning for writing and for journalism, which was destined first to bring him loss and trouble, then gain and fame.
