ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to understand the social and political philosophies of drug policy and provides which government and private agencies share responsibility for drug control as well as appreciate the contribution of private industry to drug control. It compares federal drug control strategies and to consider both supply- and demand-oriented drug policies as well as understand the utility of federal drug control legislation. Perhaps one of the greatest ironies in the search for a modern, workable drug control policy is that most people, despite their political preferences or social differences, desire basically the same thing: a safe society. To begin a discussion on drug control policy, one of the absurdities in modern drug control policy thinking might serve to illustrate the philosophy of failed drug policy. The federal government has adopted its own drug control policy and enforcement initiatives, for the most part drug control efforts are a local option.
