Why did my father lift Orloff over the fence that separ ated the paddocks from the house and bury him ‘at home’? Why did he and I stand weeping at the graveside for some minutes? Why did my father not dump Orloff in a paddock far from the house so that we would not smell his decom pos ing body? Paddocks in Australia are strewn with the bones of dead sheep.
