ABSTRACT

Ecotourism, possibly of all the distinct areas of tourism, has achieved a greater industry-wide acceptance and consumer preference from its focus on conservation and nature. This saw its early forms of activity and policy focus on the need for professionalisation and ongoing quality assurance, introducing accreditation, guidelines and university-based courses as it was being established. This chapter provides an outline of how ecotourism has and can continue to work towards sustainability and how in achieving this, it has developed ways to provide and maintain quality sustainable tourism destinations.
