ABSTRACT

This chapter explores an approach embedding alternative media into public sphere theory. It demonstrates how publics can be formed by various practices of activism. The chapter considers the theoretical models that attempt to make sense of the specificity and complexity of alternative media production. It discusses several theoretical references that argue for a diversity of publics to emphasize how the public sphere can be perceived as a site where social meaning is generated, circulated, and contested. The chapter explores the role of feminist zines and online activism in the construction of alternative meanings by drawing on the aforementioned theoretical models. It presents feminist activism expressing itself through zines as well as blogs and hashtags. The chapter attempts to contextualize the role of alternative media in the public sphere. Alternative media and cultural practices are of central importance for the production of critical publics.
