ABSTRACT

Existential self-awareness as a gay person led to the psychological exploration, with perhaps a dash of magic, or magick, or adapted Tantra, which seems most typical of independent Gay Spirituality (GS). In short, whether it is consciously realized or not, the gay is like a native American two-spirit person. If something was missing from gay identity it was 'a consciousness, a sense of spirit'. The group cultivated what it was easier for Faeries to pursue anywhere-such as the urban settings Hay's followers were avoiding–self and dream-analysis based on Jungian psychology, plus magic and meditation along the lines of Mitch Walker's Visionary Love exercises. Group members believed they would generate gay soul by an ongoing 'coming out' process that drew upon an eternally indwelling gay spirit beyond and behind the individual's inherited beliefs. Mark Thompson's Gay Spirit and Gay Soul, rambling collections of interviews and features, are gay scriptures by default because they function as most people's introduction to GS.
