ABSTRACT

Aa.1 The Danger ofGi·uing Way to Passion, in Fi·ue Exemplary No·uefs (DGUI) is the title that was given to a collection advertised as 'Speedily to be publish'd' on 26 December 1720 on the final page of Ab.2.1 Letters from a Lady of Quality to a Chevalier (LLQ).' Although the collection did not appear under this title, each work mentioned in the advertisement was issued separately. The five novels that make up DGW are: Ab.4 The British Recluse (BR), Ab.S The Injur'd Husband (I H), Ab.6 Idalia, Ab.8 Lasselia and Ab.9 The Rash Resol·ue (RR). The first of these titles did not appear tor more than a year after being advertised (in April 1722) and the series was not completed until December 1723. Not only did it take three years to issue all the five novels, the series did not appear in the order advertised. The regular appearance of the novels was interrupted by Haywood's two plays, Ab.3 Fair Captive (FC) and Ab. 7 A Wife to be Lett.
