ABSTRACT

GallinazoinChile;andMolina,whoareawareofthedifference betweentheC.atratusandC.aura,hasnotnoticedit;yet,onthe oppositesideoftheCordillera,nearMendoza,itiscommon.Theydo notoccurinChiloe,oronthewestcoastofthecontinentsouthofthat island.InWilson'sOrnithologyitissaidthat'thecarrioncrow(asthis birdiscalledintheUnitedStates)isseldomfoundontheAtlanticto thenorthwardofNewbern,lat.35°NorthCarolina'.ButinRichardson'sFaunaBoreali-Americana,itismentioned,ontheauthorityofMr DavidDouglas,thatonthePacificsideofthecontinent,itiscommon onthemarshyislandsoftheColumbia,andintheneighbourhoodof Lewis'sandClark'srivers(45°-47°N.).Ithas,therefore,awiderrange inthenorthernIthaninthesouthernhalfofthecontinent.These vulturescertainlyaregregarious;fortheyseemtohavepleasurein eachother'ssociety,andarenotsolelybroughttogetherbythe attractionofacommonprey.Onafineday,aflockmayoftenbeseen atagreatheight;eachbirdwheelingroundandroundinthemost gracefulevolutions.Thisisevidentlydonefortheirsport;or,perhaps, isconnected(forasimilarhabitmaysometimesbeobservedduringthe breedingseasonamongstourcommonrooks)withtheirmatrimonial alliances.
