ABSTRACT

The Beagle anchored within the mouth of the Santa Cruz. This river is situated about sixty miles south of Port St Julian. The river here assumed a size and appearance, which, even at the highest point we ultimately reached, was scarcely diminished. The river had a winding course, and was very rapid; and the appearance of the country offered no temptation to proceed any further. The complete similarity of the productions throughout Patagonia is one of its most striking characters. In the landscape of Patagonia, the guanaco replaces the gazelle, and the agouti the hare. Than, perhaps, any other country in the world. On the Patagonian shore, the steep cliff nears the mouth of the Rio Negro in lat. When an animal is killed in the country, it is well known that the condors, like other carrion vultures, soon gain intelligence of it, and congregate in an inexplicable manner.
