Appendix: Literary Allusions in The Witlings and The Woman-Hater

In The Witlings, Lady Smatter alludes frequently to her favourite poets, but names only seven: Shakespeare, Dryden, Prior, Parnell, Swift, Pope, and Thomson. In The Woman-Hater, she alludes to a much larger num­ ber of authors, though with no improvement in accuracy. All the writers to whom Lady Smatter alludes in these plays are listed below.
