ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the symbolic and religious structures which have allowed and encouraged a culture of violence towards women. The pandemic of women-killing is a current crisis in Latin America. A pivotal force of creative feminist theologizing in the face of violence against women in Latin America has been Brazilian Sister Ivone Gebara, arguably the continents most well-known and influential ecofeminist theologian. For women questioning gender-based violence throughout Latin America, chief among the biblical stories critical to re-examine are the creation stories of Genesis and the symbols of God, Eve, Paradise and the serpent. In northern Honduras, most women are pre-occupied not with the search for happiness but with survival. Although Mexico and Guatemala have received the most attention in Latin America for the highest levels of women-killing, Honduras is also experiencing the crisis. Churches in Honduras have made no public statements or organized any campaigns against feminicide.
