ABSTRACT

The Israeli State has promulgated the traditionally religious sanctification of Jewish victims Kiddush Hashem while enforcing secular legislation. In search of God and humanity, Jewish women transpose the horrors of mass destruction of the Holocaust into art of atrocity. In corollary Hanna Szenes' life-story, diary and poetic works have served her community like hagiography, and like holy texts they have been promulgated, taught, recited and sung in schools, synagogues and Holocaust memorial days in Israel and around the world. In search of God and humanity, Jewish women transpose the horrors of mass destruction of the Holocaust into art of atrocity. Acting as a pure soul who enhances goodness in the world, mystical experiences empower her to act as a holy intermediary between God and community. Like Naomi Ginsberg who is a scientist, Chaia classically finds her ecstatic pains of soul in identification with the Holocaust victims.
