ABSTRACT

The symbiotic relationship between rich and poor was originally expressed in the warren of bazaars and hutments which grew up around the mansions of the babu elite. The relationship between multistory masonry buildings, known as kothabari, and kutcha bustees is a modem variant of this development. In some places there is a mix of bustees and four-story blocks, originally built as govemment housing but which have become badly overcrowded as renters have sub let space to poor families.
