ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author pursues yet another path to absolutes. The alternative path to absolutes will also address the question raised about the deeper motives for taking the path of openness. The chapter suggests that the search for absolute values is a different kind of search than familiar ones. It is within what may be called the "realm of aspiration". Searches in the realm of aspiration can be called "quests", to use the language of the great legends and myths of mankind like that of the Holy Grail, which often have so much to teach us about the important things in life. There is another way to illustrate how aspiration lies behind the quest for human knowledge, of which the quest for absolute value is a part. The Polish writer Stanislaw Lem has written a fascinating novel about a planet called "Solaris" covered by a sentient ocean with astonishing powers.
