ABSTRACT

In analyzing the relationships that respondents have with their parents, in this chapter, and with other, extended kin, in the next chapter, the major organizing concept is that of kinship solidarity. Kinship solidarity refers to the strength of interpersonal ties among kin. Granovetter (1973) defined the elements involved in the strength of any interpersonal tie as: (1) the amount of time the persons spend together; (2) the emotional intensity of the relationship; (3) the amount of intimacy, mutual confiding; and (4) the extent of reciprocal services which characterize the tie.
