Three explanations are commonly offered for the deputies' turn from support to opposition toward Yeltsin and reform. Many deputies, and especially their chairman, Ruslan K.hasbulatov, claimed that in resisting Y eltsin, they were defending a society suffering from the effects of misguided, radical economic experiments and a gathering presidential dictatorship. Shock therapy had led to severe recession and a breakdown of the social order, so the deputies were faithfully defending the interests ofthe voters in fighting Yeltsin.
