ABSTRACT

Official Hong Kong government estimates show that, in 1990, New Zealand was the fifth most popular destination country for Hong Kong emigrants, after Canada, Australia, the United States, and Singapore. 1 Between 1 November 1987 and 30 June 1992, 13,530 Hong Kong citizens were granted permanent residence in New Zealand. 2 In particular, Hong Kong contributed the greatest number of persons approved permanent residence in the period from July 1990 to June 1992, 8,677 persons, while the figure for the United Kingdom, the traditional major source country, was 6,966.
