ABSTRACT
Discussion of the Chinese in Britain falls neatly into three more or less discrete periods. The first begins in the eighteenth century and ends just after the Second World War; the second starts in about 1950 and is still continuing; the third has yet to occur. The sequence is not typical of the general pattern of Chinese migration, though its causes have much in common with those which led to movement to other parts of the world.
