ABSTRACT

India held its first general elections in 1952. As I had been a political activist in the Punjab, I decided I would like to be a candidate for Parliament for the constituency of Ambala/Kalka/Simla. I paid the requisite candidate’s fees and went to see Sri Rafi Ahmed Kidwai, a member of the Parliamentary Board, to find out the attitude of members. Sri Kidwai used to live in Western Court and I knew him personally since he too belonged to Uttar Pradesh. As soon as he saw me he said the Parliamentary Board had accepted my name for the constituency.
