The Academic China Specialists
Since the end of World War n, academic China scholars in the United States have spent more than their share of time at the center of public controversies. First, there were the accusations of disloyalty leveled from the right wing during the McCarthy era against China scholars who had supposedly helped cause the United States to "lose" China. Then there were criticisms hurled from the Left during the 1960s against China scholars (some of the same ones in fact who had been attacked from the Right a decade earlier) who had supposedly aided and abetted American imperialism in Asia. Finally, in the wake ofthe 1989 Tiananmen massacre, there have been bitter complaints directed from both the Left and the Right against China scholars who during the 1980s had supposedly encouraged the American public to look favorably on a Chinese regime that had flagrantly abused human rights.
