The American Study of Modern China: Toward the Twenty-first Century

The American study of contemporary China is likely to undergo major changes in the twenty-first century. Opportunities beckon, and issues loom that have made the 1990s a decade of stimulating departures and bold insight. The same factors that contributed to the dynamism of modem Chinese studies during the past thirty years are likely to persist: the borrowing and adaptation of analytical approaches from other fields, the recruitment of bright young people into the field, access to new sources of information, changes in the organization and funding of the field, and, above all, developments within China and changes in Sino-American relations, as well as continued evolution in the intellectual milieu in which Chinese studies in the United States takes place.
