In September of that year, three major American universities (Harvard, California at Berkeley, and Michigan) jointly sponsored a conference to commemorate no fewer than four of them: the tenth anniversary of the inauguration of the post-Mao reforms, the fortieth anniversary of the establishment of the People's Republic, the seventieth anniversary of the May Fourth demonstrations of 1919, and the 150th anniversary of the beginning ofthe Opium War.!
