ABSTRACT

Thispaperprovideslessonsforindustrialrelationsreformeffortsinthenew nationsemergingfromtheformerSovietUnionandEasternBloc.Ourpurposeis toidentifythebasicindustrial-relationspracticesthatenabletheadvancedindustrialcountriestocompeteinworldmarkets.Thepaperdoesnotprovideadetaileddescriptiveaccountoftheexistingindustrial-relationsinstitutionsinthe formerlycommunistcountries,nordoesitassessthelikelyshort-runconsequencesoftheeconomicrestructuringunderwayacrossthenewnations.Rather, ourfocusisontheexperiencesintheadvancedeconomiesandthelessonsthose experiencescontainregardingsuccessfulindustrial-relationspractice.
