ABSTRACT
With Japan's surrender in August 1945, Grew felt that his diplomatic career of forty-one years had come to an end. Byrnes had suggested that he should go to Japan as MacArthur's political adviser, but Grew declined. In letters to various friends, including one to his son Harry on August 21, 1945, he gave the following reasons for his decision.
