ABSTRACT

It is an old lament: We will not attain gender equity through mandated action programs if the assumptions that underpin organizations do not change. "Equal" treatment too often leads to enshrining what is conventionally done. And, because men have predominated, the conventional suits men well. Approaches that deviate from the norm are deemed lesser rather than different, so behaving in conventional (androcentric) ways can provide advantages. As we saw in chapter 4, employment policies and practices have been structured according to the private life assumptions of men. Hence, individuals who can fit those assumptions, usually single women and men in traditional marriages, find fewer interferences between their private lives and work.
