Witness to Upheaval
Our cooperation began in 1988. In the course of making arrangements, we came to understand that we had to overcome obstacles, prejudices, and stereotypes that had built up over many years. Soviet society, embarked on restructuring, declared its commitment to universal human values, democracy, legality, and human rights. It was the breakthrough to new political thinking which opened the way to the Soviet-American dialogue on human rights. Leaving confrontation behind, we decided to look at the human rights situation in our countries objectively and without bias.
