To express our views and understanding of the human rights situation in the United States is not the easiest of tasks, for the present book is intended for both American and Russian readers. Naturally, we are aware that our American readers know better than do we the human rights situation in their own country, although Russians like to say that you see more from a distance. We are fully aware of the complexities but nevertheless have taken on the huge task of analyzing the way in which the American legal system guarantees and defends human rights.
