Two Bases of Social Justice

Editors' Introduction: This essay, published in early 1989, shows Yan's growing preoccupation with many of China's social problems: galloping inflation, rising income inequalities, and widespread corruption. For Yan and many of China's reformist intellectuals, these growing problems can only be dealt with by adopting thorough reforms, rather than half-baked reforms or by stopping reforms altogether.
