Yan coauthored it with Bao Zunxin, a senior research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The original title was "Zai minzhu yu fazhi guidao shang jiejue dangqian Zhongguo de wenti—jian gao Li Peng shu" (Solve China's current problems along the track of democracy and the rule of law—-also a letter to Li Peng).
