ABSTRACT
The ultimate contest between tradition and modernity takes place in the realm of knowledge—the acceptance of a rational approach to human affairs and the establishment of institutions of education and scholarship designed to disseminate this outlook. Unlike many aspects of social change, where premodem ways of doing things evolve gradually into modem ways over many decades, this is one area in which the traditional and the modem clash head-on.
