BASICALLY,JJNSEIANNAlPROVIDESaplacetoseekrelieffrompsychologicalpain,amediumthroughwhichpeoplecanprotestagainstthe situationswhichhavebroughtonthepain.Thecolumndemonstratesthat wivesofallagesinJapanfeeltheyhavealottoprotestabout.Nearlya fourthofalllettersprintedinthecolumncontain,atleastinpart,complaintsfromwivesabouttheirmarriages,andamajorityofthesepinpoint husbandsasthesourceoftheirproblem.AnAmericanreadingthroughall thesequerulouslettersfromwivesmighteasilyconcludethatJapanese womenmustsurelybeamongearth'smostmiserablecreatures.
